About the Episode: Louise Arbour

Photo of Louise Arbour

Louise Arbour has stared unflinchingly in the face of some of the world’s worst human atrocities and brought the perpetrators to justice. As the former Supreme Court Judge, former Chief Prosecutor of the UN International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, her steely sense of justice has been a portrait of courage and righteousness. From a high school that has just been named in her honour, this week’s Star Portraits artists put her on the spot in a whole new way. Will Ms. Arbour be decisive about her choice of portraits, or are we looking at a hung jury?

Louise Arbour has served as President & CEO of the International Crisis Group since July 2009. Previously she acted as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, was Chief Prosecutor for the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda and was a Judge on the Supreme Court of Canada. She is a Grande Officière de l’Ordre national du Québec and has also received the Companion of the Order of Canada, Colombian Order of National Merit. In February 2010 she was named Commander of the French Legion of Honour. Ms. Arbour has received honorary doctorates from some thirty Universities and numerous medals and awards.
